Monday: Reflection - Silence

October 05, 2026

This month, I’m thinking about silence.

Not just the absence of speaking, but the practice of intentionally being quiet.

Because knowing when to say something—and when not to say something—is part of intentional communication.

There’s a big difference between choosing silence and shutting down.

Silence can be a way of punishing someone.
It can be used to create distance or gain power.
It can be a way of avoiding something we don't want to say.

But intentional silence is different.

It’s a choice.

It’s the moment when I pause and ask myself:

Does what I’m about to say actually add something here?

Sometimes the answer is yes.

And sometimes it’s no.

Sometimes saying less gives the conversation room to breathe.

Sometimes silence allows someone else to finish their thought instead of jumping in.

Sometimes it gives me enough space to notice that the conversation is moving somewhere I don't actually want it to go.

And sometimes silence is what allows me to come back to what I really want to say.

I can feel a conversation speeding up—words coming faster, emotions rising, everyone reacting—and instead of adding more, I can pause.

I can get quiet.

I can ground myself in the space again.

And ask:

What am I actually trying to communicate?

How do I want to show up here?

Silence, then, isn't simply about not talking.

It's another way of communicating.

It's a way of creating space.

A way of slowing something down.

A way of listening.

A way of choosing rather than reacting.

And like any part of intentional communication, it takes practice.

This month, I’m going to be paying more attention to the moments when I want to fill the silence—and asking myself whether my words are actually adding something.

Sometimes the most intentional thing I can say is nothing.

And sometimes the most intentional thing I can do is pause long enough to find the words I actually mean.

WANT TO PRACTICE TOGETHER?

If silence, pausing, and knowing when—and how—to speak are things you want to practice more deeply, I have two small-group ways to work with me beyond the Insider.

My yearlong mentorship is an intimate group where we meet live three times a month. Each month, we focus on a specific communication or mindfulness practice, and then we work with what is actually coming up for you in your life.

What conversations are you having?
Where are you getting stuck?
What are you noticing about the way you communicate?
What would you like to handle differently?

We bring those real-life situations into the group and work through them together.

The mentorship is different from the Insider. The Insider is daily email accountability and one live call each month. The mentorship gives us much more space to go deeper and work directly with what's happening in your communication.

I also have my Intentional Communication Training Program, my flagship training that I've been teaching since 2017.

The training is for you if you're ready to really change the way you're interacting—to become more responsive rather than reactive and learn how to navigate challenging interactions with more ease and grace.

Both are intentionally kept small so there is room for real conversation, practice, and support.

If you're curious about either one and aren't sure which would be the best fit, reply to this newsletter and I'll send you my calendar link. We can talk about where you are, what you're looking for, and which option might make the most sense for you.

No pressure. Just a conversation.
